Elizabeth Portraits and Modern Portraits

Symbolism, Symbolism and a little bit more Symbolism. It's something that's been hammered into us. It's almost impossible now to look at a photo or a painting without looking for symbolism. The truth is this because has been the case with art since the dawn of time. We put things into pictures that we want to be read into.

Elizabeth was hailed as Virgin Queen and what better way to solidify this belief than to cram it into every portrait of her.

The Siena Sieve Portrait, Metsys the Younger, 1583
Here is one of many portraits of Elizabeth and her Virgin Status. There is more of a story behind this one as opposed to it just drowning is symbols of Virginity;

    Perhaps I'm reading too much into this portrait of Elizabeth but in the background you can see there a few gentlemen. You could say they are suitors who are cueing for her hand in marriage but Elizabeth is sitting there looking pretty proud with her virginity sieve.

    What about today? To be fair, I wouldn't say that I personally pay too much attention to portraits. I don't think they exist in the same capacity that they once did.  It's all about the photos now.

    This is one of the modern portraits that I've found that contains symbolism;

    Delia Smith by John Swannell

    This is Delia Smith. She's a well known tv personality that originated from the culinary side of television. What I find interesting about this is when she's cooking on her television, she's juggling a million things and she still manages to produce something that's epic. In the photograph everything is precariously balanced and she is the calm of the storm.
