White Base Application/ Traditional Elizabethan Make Up

In our practical session we were told told to prep the skin and apply a white base.

I was the model for this session.

Ross cleansed, toned and moisturised my skin and began applying Illamasqua Skin Base in White.

We were told that getting a smooth base wasn’t the aim of this application and that texture was the key.  What were were told was to bear in mind that the tools we have and use today weren’t around when cosmetics were used in the Elizabethan times.

We were then told to heavily powder the base because this helped give it a ‘chalky’ base.

When Ross was happy with his application he applied blusher, he used the bright matte red from the Kryolan Blush Palette.

Block out the eyebrows if nescessary

Method for Blush Application:

1.    When the base has been applied, use a blusher brush of your preference and select a blusher. A matte colour is recommended for authenticity.

2.    Tap off any excess off of your brush and ask your model to smile.

3.    Apply the Blusher to the apples of the cheeks in a dabbing motion. Do not blend it upwards. Just keep the colour on the apples of the cheeks.

4.    Build the colour up as required.

Method for Mascara:

1.    Take a disposable mascara wand a load it up with up with white Supracolour

2.    Getting your model to look down, apply to lashes in a downward ‘zig-zag’ motion

3.    Ask your model to look up and sweep through the lashes making sure that is coating the lashes from root to tip

4.    Apply to the bottom lashes making sure you get the baby lashes near the inner corner of the eye.

Method for Lip colour:

1.    Make sure the lips are prepped. (Exfoliated if necessary)

2.    Select the colour that you are going to use. With Elizabethan make up it is sometimes better to use powders but this is depending on the overall look you are going for

3.    With a clean finger apply the powder to the lips. I like this method because it really softens the colour and gives a natural look.

4.    Keep building up the colour with your fingers until you reach the desired colour you need.
