In our practical session we were told told to prep the skin and apply a white base.

I was the model for this session.

Ross cleansed, toned and moisturised my skin and began applying Illamasqua Skin Base in White.

We were told that getting a smooth base wasn’t the aim of this application and that texture was the key.  What were were told was to bear in mind that the tools we have and use today weren’t around when cosmetics were used in the Elizabethan times.

We were then told to heavily powder the base because this helped give it a ‘chalky’ base.

When Ross was happy with his application he applied blusher, he used the bright matte red from the Kryolan Blush Palette.

Block out the eyebrows if nescessary

Method for Blush Application:

1.    When the base has been applied, use a blusher brush of your preference and select a blusher. A matte colour is recommended for authenticity.

2.    Tap off any excess off of your brush and ask your model to smile.

3.    Apply the Blusher to the apples of the cheeks in a dabbing motion. Do not blend it upwards. Just keep the colour on the apples of the cheeks.

4.    Build the colour up as required.

Method for Mascara:

1.    Take a disposable mascara wand a load it up with up with white Supracolour

2.    Getting your model to look down, apply to lashes in a downward ‘zig-zag’ motion

3.    Ask your model to look up and sweep through the lashes making sure that is coating the lashes from root to tip

4.    Apply to the bottom lashes making sure you get the baby lashes near the inner corner of the eye.

Method for Lip colour:

1.    Make sure the lips are prepped. (Exfoliated if necessary)

2.    Select the colour that you are going to use. With Elizabethan make up it is sometimes better to use powders but this is depending on the overall look you are going for

3.    With a clean finger apply the powder to the lips. I like this method because it really softens the colour and gives a natural look.

4.    Keep building up the colour with your fingers until you reach the desired colour you need.

Queen Elizabeth I had many ladies in waiting. It is said the most she ever had at once was 24. Loyalty was something that was very important to the Queen as it was one of her main principles. Ladies in waiting could have been chosen since the Queen was a child. More often than not if there was a reagent looking after the royalty, they would oversee the selection process. The position held a very powerful place in court, the Queen would eventually source a marriage for each of her Ladies. Their well being was the responsibility of the Queen. Elizabeth stayed very loyal to people who were loyal to her regardless of their station.

The Lady in Waiting I've chosen to do my research on is Anne Vavasour. When reading about her she seemed to have a fairly colourful past and I thought this would make for an interesting make up design.

So here's a little about her:

Soon after arriving at court, Anne became the mistress of Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford (1550-1604). Edward de Vere had been married to Anne Cecil (d.1588), the daughter of William Cecil, on the 16th December 1571. However, the couple did not enjoy a happy marriage and the couple separated in 1576, although they did reconcile in January 1582 and remained together until her death in 1588.

- She hid her pregnancy successfully for nine months before giving birth.

- The Queen ordered her to the Tower of London because of the illegitimacy of her child.

- this relationship ended swiftly. Before 1590 Anne was married to a sea captain named John Finch, alias Freeman. However, around the same time she became the mistress to another nobleman; Sir Henry Lee (1533-1611), his wife Anne Paget died in 1590. Anne Vavasour gave birth to Henry's illegitimate son Thomas Vavasour in 1589. Anne and Henry lived openly as a couple at his manor of Ditchley. It appears that Queen Elizabeth did not disapprove of this relationship of Anne's as she visited the couple at Ditchley in September 1592. Henry gave a pension to Anne's husband John Finch starting in 1605; he was to receive £20 a year. The couple received another royal visit in September 1608 when Queen Anne visited them at a lodge near Woodstock. Anne and Henry remained together until his death in 1611. In his Will, Henry left Anne £700 a year and properties, as well as instructions for their joint tomb burial in St Peter's Chapel in Quarrendon. The epitaph for Anne on the tomb read;

"Under this stone entombed lies a fair & worthy Dame
Daughter to Henry Vavasour, Anne Vavasour her name.
She living with Sir Henry Lee, for love long time did dwell
Death could not part them but here they rest within one cell"

Anne Vavasour hasn't been popular in TV and Film, So I've found some contemporary depictions of classic ladies in waiting. It's from my favourite TV show called Reign. It's set during Elizabethan times but it's about Mary Queen of Scots. I really like the contempary twist on the ladies in waiting. I've looked to it for inspiration for my final designs.

So this is my self portrait. I've taken a lot of selfies but as soon as I have to put thought into one it became a challenge.  I had to think about what to put in it that symbolises me. As this is what I wanted my potrait to convey.

Obviously Batman had to be in there somewhere. I'm obsessed. I can't help it. I've been like since watching Batman Forever with my Daddy when I was younger. I'm actually a fan of the villains more than I am of Batman himself. Namely the Joker and Harley Quinn.

My note pad- I'm full of ideas. I like having lists and I enjoy writing things down. It's actually the notebook I use to take notes in my lectures and seminars. I get really precious about them. I normally by one when my life has gone wrong or unplanned and I use it to start a fresh.

Passport- It goes everywhere with me. I wish I could travel more and I hope that with my career choice I'll get there eventually.

Make-Up Artist Handbook- Clue is in the name for this one. Even if you were to take away the book title. I'm a bookworm. I love reading, I find solace in books. It means I can escape.

My Lipsticks- I have tonnes, they not might all be Mac, but to me that doesn't matter. It means I can create a million identities when I'm not feeling 100% comfortable in my own skin.

Scruffy (the dog) He was my first teddy and he comes everywhere. Being away from home has made me miss my dogs a lot more than I thought I would.

You can see a tiny corner of my messy room. Intentional. My life matches my room. Sometimes it's just chaos and other times it's slightly organised chaos.
